VHRmedia, Jakarta – The Independent Election Supervisory Committee (KIPP) asked the General Election Commission (KPU) to delay the 2009 Presidential Election. The presidential election can be held after KPU stage a repolling for citizenries who lost their right to vote in legislative election which was held on April 9th.

KPU is obliged to rehabilitate the citizenry’s right in voting in the legislative election. “Whatever the reason is, the presidential election has to be delayed before the right of citizenry is repaired and rehabilitated,” the General Secretary of KIPP Mochtar Sindang said, Wednesday (4/22).

KIPP, Indonesia Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), Legal Aid and Human Right Association, and Indonesian Women for Justice Association will file a lawsuit against KPU. As the reason, KPU has neglected aspiration of the Indonesian people who ask a repeat polling and failed to facilitate the right of citizenries who are not registered on the permanent voters list in the 2009 General Election.

Director of Indonesia Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) Patra M Zein said that the lawsuit will be filed on Thursday (4/23). The General Election Commission can stage repeat polling like they had already done in East Flores and Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara and Papua. “If they are willing to, they can stage the repeat polling,” he said.

The accused for this case is General Election Commission chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshari and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as a government representative. “This is an obligation to fulfill the human right. The right will not be violated if the General Election Commission do their job professionally and full of integrity,” Patra said. (E1)
